How to Restrict Editing on a PDF — Free Online

Restricting editing on a PDF prevents recipients from modifying, copying, or printing the content without your permission.

1

Two Types of PDF Passwords

User password (open password) — prevents anyone from opening the PDF without the password. Owner password (permissions password) — allows opening but restricts editing, copying, and printing. You can apply either or both.

2

Apply Restrictions at pdfeditor.onl/protect-pdf

Go to pdfeditor.onl/protect-pdf. Upload your PDF. Set an owner password. Select which permissions to restrict: editing, copying text, and printing.

Tip: If you only want to prevent editing (not opening), use just an owner/permissions password. The recipient can open the PDF normally but cannot modify it.

3

Download and Distribute

Download the restricted PDF. Recipients can view it in any PDF viewer, but edit, copy, and print functions will be disabled according to your settings.

Standard restrictions prevent casual editing in normal PDF viewers. Determined users with specialized software can sometimes bypass owner-only permissions. For highly sensitive documents, user (open) password protection is stronger.

Is restricting PDF editing free?

Yes — completely free at pdfeditor.onl/protect-pdf.
